Independent School and Day Nursery in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire

Highfields Independent School and Day Nursery is a thriving and supportive environment with a strong sense of family and well embedded values and traditions of which the school is very proud. Open five days a week during school term time, offering a full day from 7:30am until 6:00pm for children from the age of 2. Highfields main school starts with Reception for children turning 5 and goes up to Year 6. We prepare children for common entrance or 11+ entry to senior school at the age of 11.

Personal growth and well-being are valued as highly as academic success, with an emphasis on the holistic development of the individual. Highfields provides children with a wealth of contextualised learning experiences to create meaningful connections, skills and memories which last a lifetime.

Sport, Music, Forest School, Speech and Drama, as well as the Arts, are all equally important components of the full and exciting curriculum that has been developed in order to build well-rounded young individuals.

At Highfields, curiosity is championed and pupils are encouraged to realise their potential and discover new talents across all areas of the curriculum through very high levels of engagement and participation.

We develop ‘Highfeldians’ who are prepared not only for senior school, but life beyond. Flexible, independent thinkers and learners, with a love of adventure and a strong sense of identity, Highfields pupils are spirited, resourceful and self-motivated with respect for both themselves and others. Able to identify and appreciate opposing opinions and beliefs, Highfields build proactive, tolerant and considered global citizens of the future, with a well-developed sense of responsibility, and a desire to make a difference to our world.

“Excellent Academic Achievement”

Every year many of our pupils are offered scholarships to their chosen senior school in a range of disciplines, including music, sport, art, academic and all rounder ability.

We are very proud of all our leavers and celebrate their success with a special speech day and awards ceremony at the end of the year, when we invite a distinguished guest speaker to join us.

We support the decision of parents on the right school for their child across, Independent, Grammar and local Senior Schools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child join Highfields at any time or only into Reception?

Highfields admission process is the same irrespective if your child joins in Reception or you wish your child to move school. We have a great track record of settling children in mid-term into all years.

Can I pay my fees monthly?

Fees can be paid monthly (the scheme runs from 1st July for 12 months) for no additional charge. We also accept tax-free childcare for wraparound care and holiday clubs.

Does my child have to go to another independent school at year 7?

Highfields staff support you with the decision of the most suitable senior school for your child to attend, whether that is another independent school, a grammar school or a local school. We will provide support for 11+ and common entrance at no extra charge.

Is the nursery only for pupils wanting the main school?

No, the nursery is open to all children from their 2nd birthday, subject to spaces being available. Children need to attend at least two sessions a week (such as two mornings or all day) as this allows the child to settle. About half our nursery children stay on to main school and the other leave for a local school. We allow you to use your 15 or 30 hours funding and also accept tax free childcare.

How will I know if Highfields is right for my child?

Choosing the right school is a really important decision. We suggest you look at all the information about Highfields we provide on our website but the best way is usually by a visit – come and see our staff teach, meet our children and see the lovely setting. Contact us to arrange a visit or attend an open morning.

What if I want to get more involved as a parent - do you have a parent’s association?

Yes, we do. It is called the Friends and Family of Highfields (FFH) and they organise amazing events, such as a Summer Ball and Highfest, as well as more regular things, such as freeze-pop Friday and termly film nights. They also run the second hand uniform shop. Funds raised from these events go into providing even more enhanced enrichment for your child, such as virtual headset days or to pay for our new garden pavilion. "Top performing school across all abilities"

Our academic results show that children across all abilities who come to Highfields consistently achieve significantly above the national average.

We provide an environment where the children experience a sense of pride and fulfilment that comes from working to their full potential, and where a growth mindset is championed.

We believe we give our children an education which equips them with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, both academically and personally.
