School Life

Whilst academic achievement is the centre of any school, Highfields prides itself on the development of the whole child including sports, music, arts and social skills. Again this year there was a 100% pass rate for children who sat the 11+ examination; and historically Highfields pupils have gained many bursaries at leading schools. But the School also offers excellent support for children who require individual attention in subject areas. Its aim is to develop the full potential of every child, whether they are ‘academic’ or not.

Highfields has a broad range of extra activities within the curriculum, including French from the age of four. Optional extras during school time include one-to-one music lessons in violin, cello, saxophone, clarinet and flute. The School choir, orchestra, recorder ensemble and woodwind group provide ample opportunity for individual and group musical expression within School and the Newark community. The arts are further strengthened with private lessons in speech and drama leading, as with music lessons, to external awards and accreditations. Assemblies, presentations, concerts and school productions are popular celebrations of the children’s varied talents and contribute to the confidence Highfields children exude as they move into their next school.

Highfields also has an excellent sporting reputation. With a dedicated sports hall and 14 acres of grounds, Highfields provides an extensive range of physical education opportunities including successful local and regional teams in football, tag rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, tennis, cross-country, orienteering and swimming. Indeed, situated just a short walk away from The Grove Sports Centre in Balderton, Highfields also provides swimming lessons year-round for all children from Reception to Year 6.
