Welcome from The Headmaster

Welcome to our web site, and thank you for taking the time to get to know a little more about our School.

This School has a deserved reputation within the local and national community for its excellence and the wealth of opportunities available to all pupils. We have been recognised by one of the national newspapers, for two years in succession, as one of the top preparatory schools in Great Britain.

As a School, we are extremely delighted with outcomes and findings from our recent ISI Inspection as it highlights the many strengths that we have as a School and have maintained, and also the many improvements made in recent years. As with any Inspection, there are recommendations for improvement, all of which the School was aware of prior to the Inspection and, indeed, feature in the School’s annual development plans. Indeed, many of the recommendations have already been fulfilled since the Inspection.

There are many positive points within the report but the highlights, from my perspective, are :

  • That the pupils speak with great excitement and enjoyment about their School.
  • That pupils are well prepared both academically and in their personal development.
  • That the School promotes the development of the foundations necessary for the children to build happy and fulfilling lives.
  • That pupils of differing abilities achieve as well as their peers because of the helpful, well planned support they receive from their teachers.
  • High quality support in the classroom from teachers and teaching assistants
  • That pupils have very positive attitudes towards work and study.
  •  Pupils have very positive attitudes and are extremely well motivated; their behaviour is exemplary.
  • Pupils feel valued and significant, behave in a responsible manner, and develop a responsibility of service to their community.
  • Pupils greatly enjoy and value their time at Highfields and are proud to belong to this happy community.
  • “It was a pleasure to meet these pupils, who were extremely polite and helpful….”

These are just a small selection of the many positive comments made by the Inspection team. Such a positive outcome does not come as a surprise as we already know, as parents, teachers, pupils and governors, that Highfields is an excellent School; it is extremely gratifying, however, to have it acknowledged and lauded within the national domain.

Highfields is justifiably regarded as an excellent preparatory school. However, we do not ‘rest on our laurels’ and have continued to develop the range of opportunities and standards within the classroom, as well as within sports, drama, music and, of late, chess.

We recognise the individual in your child, and we are proud of the many things we do to help your child feel valued and encouraged as an individual.

Above all, if your child feels valued in the classroom and beyond, if he or she knows that we really are interested in them, if they can see that we will go the extra mile for them, then in my experience they are much more likely to go the extra mile for us, and for you. High achieving children, irrespective of their real potential, are those who have high self esteem. We go out of our way to inculcate that feeling of self worth.

We look forward to welcoming you to Highfields as a visit will enable you to gain a full picture of the unique and caring environment that makes us so special.

With best wishes,

Mr. D. R. Wood,
Headmaster.
